About POI

The Pacific Ocean Initiative (POI*) is a way to harness the considerable good will and collective strength of Pacific Ocean science and society. Through collaborative, inclusive, and open science, POI fosters healthy Pacific Ocean ecosystems that support resilient communities.

Addressing ocean health issues requires a culture of collaboration, standardised approaches, and development of new relationships across scientific disciplines and between ocean users.

POI facilitates project development and networking that fosters engagement of ocean users, knowledge providers and funders, to develop relevant and well-communicated science. Capability building will be prioritised to strengthen research capacity across Pacific institutions. Community knowledge and engagement will be actively sought to achieve the most relevant outcomes and maximum uptake.

*POI is a fortuitous acronym that coincidentally is a New Zealand Māori word - Pōī, that can mean swarm or cluster.

The POI was used, many years ago, by the indigenous Maori people of New Zealand to increase their flexibility and strength in their hands and arms as well as improving coordination.
