Why science?

Uncovering the mystery

"Here we are in the 21st century and scientists have just put a rover on Mars. And we don't understand what is going on in the oceans"
Barbara Block, Stanford University

Science knowledge is key to understanding how healthy oceans function.

There is a significant science knowledge base from which to draw on; however, the ocean is complex and in many cases further scientific research is needed to fill knowledge gaps. Examples include our limited knowledge of coastal zones where multiple stressors from human activities on land and in the sea combine to degrade ocean ecosystems. Even the way some iconic marine species use the ocean remains a mystery.

Better scientific knowledge will ensure wise use of a  healthy ocean through informed decision making.
